"The Natural" Group Show Opens June at North Adams Antiques

North Adams, MA - The Gallery at North Adams Antiques is pleased to announce the opening of "THE NATURAL", a group exhibition of works dealing with subjects from Nature. An opening reception will be held from 3-6 pm on Saturday, June 2.

From the "folk art" perspective to the conceptual, the show will explore this popular genre from a variety of perspectives. The artists represented are from the Northern Berkshire area, Boston, New York and the South.

VIDEO: "Williamstown Warming" to air June 7 on CSPAN

"Williamstown Warming," the 10-minute video by Mount Greylock Regional High School students which won a national award from CSPAN, will be shown on the cable public-affairs network on Thurs., June 7, at 6:50 a.m. If you have RealPlayer installed on your computer and a broadband (cable or DSL) Internet connection you can watch it by clicking on this link: (STREAM WILLIAMSTOWN WARMING.) Or you can try downloading it and playing it offline by right-clicking HERE (you'll have to understand how to "unzip" a file).  The three collaborating MGRHS students were seniors Anna Hogeland and Evan Dethier, along with junior Marichal MacDonald.  CapitalNews9, the cable-news channel originating from Albany, N.Y., aired a story about the video (and one by a student at a New York school) on May 27.

STARLIGHT STAGE ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR 32nd SEASON

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Starlight Stage Youth Theatre is now accepting applications for its 32nd anniversary season, June 25-July 29, 2007.

Founded in 1976, Starlight offers a hands-on theatre experience for young people ages 8-18. The tuition-based program operates from 8:30 a.m-12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the First Congregational Church on Main Street (Rt. 2) in Williamstown. The church is right on the BRTA route and is handicap accessible. Over the course of five weeks of rehearsal the company stages a full production which is open to the general public for four evening performances.

Starlight has been directed by Robert Y. Burns and the Burns family of Williamstown since its inception.  Starlight is the third oldest continuously operating summer theatre in Berkshire County, after the Berkshire Theatre Festival and the Williamstown Theatre Festival.  Over the past 31 years hundreds of local youngsters have received their introduction to theatre with Starlight.  Some have gone on to careers in the performing arts and the technical aspects of theatre and film, but all, whatever path they have chosen in life, have come away with a deep love and respect for the theatre, and happy memories of their Starlight experience.

Basic Freshwater Fishing Course June 4

North Adams, MA - Learn a great outdoor hobby! Attend the Basic Freshwater Fishing Course sponsored by the Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife at Western Gateway Heritage State Park’'s Visitor Center. The free, three-session course is designed to cover the basics of freshwater fishing in a hands-on, relaxed format, suitable for ages 8 - 80. Classes meet June 4 and 11, from 6:00 - 8:00 PM in the Shipper’s Office. Class size is limited to the first twenty five registrants. Registration is required by May 31. Call 413-663-6312.

North Adams Announces Memorial Day Events

North Adams, MA - The city of North Adams will remember those who have died in our nation’s service on Monday morning, May 28 with a Memorial Day parade and a speaking program, beginning at 9:30 AM. The procession starts at the American Legion, travels east on Main Street and north on Eagle Street to the Veteran’s Memorial, for a speaking program, band music and soloists, and a firing squad. All veterans are welcome to participate in the parade; no group affiliation is necessary. In the event of rain, ceremonies will take place at the American Legion Hall. MASS MoCA Starts Season with Bar/None Recording Artists

North Adams, MA - On Sunday, May 27, MASS MoCA will kick off its summer season with a night of bands from the Bar/None record label headlined by Freedy Johnston in a special recreation of his influential album, “Can You Fly?”  The celebration of the 20th birthday of the storied Hoboken independent music label also features Brian Dewan and Vampire Weekend. The bands begin this bash at 7:00 PM. As part of the summer kickoff, the galleries will be open until 8:00 PM with special reduced price admission for concert ticket-holders. Work of Spencer Finch on Display at MoCA

North Adams, MA - The work of Spencer Finch is on display at MASS MoCA, building 4, first floor. The exhibit opens on May 26th and continues through spring 2008. First Public Peek at NBCC Journal May 24

North Adams, MA - On Thursday, May 24, the public is invited to the first viewing of the Northern Berkshire Community Coalition 20th Anniversary Journal. The celebration is at 8:00 AM in Lickety Split Café at MASS MoCA. The journal is a treasure trove of information concerning the history of the Coalition. A Reading on Parenthood and the Pursuit of Perfection

North Adams, MA - Inkberry & the North Adams Public Library present a reading on Parenthood and the Pursuit of Perfection with Jennifer Niesslein, Jennifer Mattern, and Catherine Newman.

Jennifer Niesslein is the author of Practically Perfect in Every Way: My Misadventures Through the World of Self-Help‹And Back (Putnum, May 2007) and the co-founder of Brain, Child: The Magazine for Thinking Mothers. Jennifer Mattern is playwright, freelance writer, and author of the blog Breed ŒEm and Weep, which won best parenting blog in the Weblog Awards in 2006.
Catherine Newman is the author of the memoir Waiting for Birdy and the weekly journal Bringing Up Ben & Birdy at BabyCenter.com. Her work has appeared in The New York Times and the anthologies The Bitch in the House, Toddler, I¹ts a Boy: Women Writers on Raising Sons and It¹s a Girl: Women Writers on Raising Daughters.

The reading will be at North Adams Public Library, 74 Church St., North Adams Saturday, June 23rd at 7:00 PM It is Free and open to the public.

June Wordplay: An Evening with Charles O'Brien

North Adams, MA - Inkberry and Papyri Books present An Evening with Charles O'Brien as the June WordPlay event. O'Brien, an historical fiction author, will read from his most recent mystery, Cruel Choices, published this year by Severn House Publishers. He will then take questions and be available to sign copies of his books.

O'Brien taught history for thirty years and was teaching a course called The History of Modern Crime & Police when he decided to use his expertise to write historical fiction. Cruel Choices is the sixth in his mystery series featuring Anne Cartier and Colonel Paul de Saint-Martin, which is set in England and France in the years leading to the French Revolution.  O'Brien  lives in Williamstown with his wife Elvy, an art historian.

The reading, hosted by Gail Burns, will be held Saturday, June 9, at 7:00 p.m. at Papyri Books, 45 Eagle Street and will be followed by our traditional open mic. Refreshments will be available, and admission is free and open to the public.
