North Adams, MA - Brill Gallery Productions announces that the 2009 Hoosic River Lights event is scheduled this year for Saturday 22 August. The purpose of this Free Event is to use Art to focus on the History and Future of the Hoosac/Hoosic/Hoosuck/Hoosick River that flows through our Region. So, if all goes well with the weather, etc. there will be 2 main themes this year:
1- TROUT: We are going to celebrate the Brook, Rainbow and Brown Trout that live in the Hoosic River. Starting tomorrow we will be building a 36-Foot long Brook Trout because that is the one that is native. The Trout will be "Alive" because its exterior will be made up of Living Plants to match the Greens, Pinks, Yellows and Blues of the Brook Trout. Artist Joan Kiley of the Eclipse Mill will oversee the Planting. The City has agreed to Water the Trout so this will stay up as a Tourist Attraction until frost.
2- LOCATION: All of this Event will take place in the MASS MoCA Parking Lots behind Big Y in North Adams. From 2 - 7:30PM we will have Kids Draw and Paint Trout. All Artists who have Trout Related Art to Display or Sell are welcome to set up shop. There will be Food, Music and Entertainment. There will be Informational Tables on Trout and the River. Besides some Local Restaurants offering their Lunch, Snack and Dinner items we expect that Wild Oats will have a table offering Farm Fresh Treats and Williamstown's award winning Harvest Moon Ribs will be there as well. Last year we had about 3,000 Visitors. This year we should have More. There is a lot more going on in the Region that weekend. MASS MoCA will be staying open until at least 7:30PM that day. MASS MoCA's amazing Project Bandaloop will be performing at 1:00, 3:00 and 5:00PM and we expect those audiences to find their way to us. Those Visitors coming to see HOOSIC RIVER LIGHTS II will also want to tour MASS MoCA and the DownStreet Galleries and the USA (Union Street Arts District), etc. Holden Street by the Parking Lots will be Closed so Parking will have to be managed.
3- LIGHT SHOWS: From 7:30 - 11:00PM there will be various Light Shows. The Food and Entertainment will continue. The Theme this year is Sky Lights to celebrate North Adams' history as the capitol of Hot Air Ballooning in the early 1900's. This Ballooning took place along the Hoosic River near MASS MoCA and Brown Street where the Gas Works was. At 9:00PM and 10:00PM there will be Special Sky Shows. The weather has to cooperate.
4- VOLUNTEERS: Last year we had about 50 Volunteers who gave an hour or 20 hours each. The experience of working together to pull off last year's Successful Event was very powerful and those who volunteered still talk about it. This year I need 100 Volunteers:
A) 25 Volunteers to help Build and Plant the 36-Foot Brook Trout. We need Scrap Wood, Lots of Plastic Pipe, Wire, Chicken Wire,
Plastic Mesh, Plants, etc. The initial work will probably take place in the back of the Windsor Mill and then be moved to the
Parking Lot. Everyone has a Contractor friend.
B) 25 Volunteers to work with the Kids and Families Building, Painting, Drawing, etc. Trout the Afternoon of the Event from 2:00PM to
7:30PM. Ryan Cronin whose work is now showing in the BRILL GALLERY will be making Rust-Oleum Trout to hang in the
River and he will be working with the Kids. We need Supplies, Trout Cookies, etc.
C) 50 Volunteers at 9:00PM and 10:00PM to assist with the Sky Lights (15 minutes per hour).
5- POSTER: Master Graphic Designer and Eclipse Mill Artist Robert Rendo has designed this year's beautiful Poster as he did last year. Copies will be sent out in a few days.
