There's a lot of smoke around a story reported in The Berkshire Record this week. The inference of the story by The Record's news editor, David Scribner, is that a region-wide economic-development organization traded a pledge for $300,000 of support from General Electric Corp. in exchange for a policy position from 1Berkshire to oppose massive dredging of the Housatonic River to clean up PCB pollution. The 1Berkshire group is looking for a director.
The story is still swirling. The Berkshire Eagle has a story about it in the Saturday edition and online. The Eagle's story quotes Michael Daley, of Berkshire Bank, as saying there was no quid-pro-quo of any kind for the money from GE. The Record doesn't publish it's print stories on the web, but blogger Dan Valenti posted Scribner's story in its entirety so you can read it there.
