"Those were the days" -- Bellow, Drohan, Pearl at Yankee Stadium

Yesterday we got an email that longtime Berkshire County reporter and editor Glenn Drohan had died of cancer on his 59th birthday.  (UPDATE: The Boston Globe's obituary for Drohan.)

When we last talked to Drohan six or eight months or so ago he was matter-of-fact about the rough bout of treatment he had been through for throat cancer. But he was back where he wanted to be -- editing The North Adams Transcript.

As someone said earlier today: "He would sit down to talk about a story and it was just, 'Look, there's  a story here, let's just talk about it and move on.' "  That's what Drohan had been doing for a quarter-century in the Berkshires and southern Vermont -- stretching back to a period during which the late Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, slain by Mideast terrorists, got his start at The Transcript.  Former Berkshire Eagle writer Daniel Bellow captured that time in this photo, send around by email today -- Bellows' shot of the two reporters, in 1992, at Yankee Stadium.

Besides the photo from Dan Bellow, yesterday's email exchanges brought this remembrance from Los Angeles, from Dan Pearl's mother and father:

The Daniel Pearl Berkshire Scholarship is given each year to a Berkshire County graduating high-school senior who plans a career in journalism or music. Drohan was one of the judges.

Reflections on the passing of Dagmar Bubriski: A cheerful civic curmudgeon, and visionary on gender equality

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- We were left wistful at Tuesday’s town meeting not to be able to greet and hear the cheerful curmudgeon of  Williamstown – Dagmar E. Bubriski.   She died last week, at age 84,  and a progressive  illness had taken her away from the civic life she loved.   You can read the details in the obituary her family wrote. A memorial service and some other events are tentatively set for Aug. 3.   With Burbriski’s passing, I hope as a town we’ll also reflect on the value of the responsible critic in society, the voice we don’t always want to, or have time,  to hear, and the value of that in stitching a community fabric that is open, tolerant and affirming of many views.

“Fabulae!” Three short plays in one evening on stage Friday/Saturday at MGRHS

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. –- An evening of one-act plays -- a comedy, a round-robin of relationships and the adaptation of a Greek myth -- will be staged by teen thespians at Mount Greylock Regional High School on Friday and Saturday (May 20-21). 

Departing from the tradition of a single play, the spring production at the regional high school is three separate works making for a lively and varied evening, entitled, “Fabulae: An evening of Three One-Act Plays.”  A student duo directs each.

The performances will be held at school’s auditorium on Cold Spring Road (U.S. Route 7), at  7 p.m. on both nights.  Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students. The first half of the evening will feature “The Actor,” the second half after intermission – intended for mature audiences -- will include “Seven Menus,” and “Medusa’s Tale.”

• ‘THE ACTOR’ by Horton Foote, tells the hilarious and moving story of a young man, bitten by the acting bug, who’ll make any sacrifice to keep his dream of a theatrical career from being crushed under the weight of his parents’ expectations for him.  Directed by Juniors: Charles Sutter and Peter Iwasiwka.

•   ‘SEVEN MENUS’ by David Ives, shows a round-robin of relationships at a restaurant table, as demonstrated by a group of friends that change, couple by couple, and course by course, throughout several different meals.  Directed by Juniors: Hannah Paul and Naomi LaChance.

• ‘MEDUSA’S TALE’ by Carol S. Lashof, follows Perseus and his quest to behead Medusa, a Gorgon who has the power to turn those who look at her into stone. However, Perseus begins to see Medusa as a victim of Poseidon and begins to question his motives and ambition.  Directed by Juniors: Maggie Crane and Ned Kleiner.
