LOCAL MURDER MYSTERY NOVELIST TO ADDRESS INCOMING MCLA FRESHMEN

NORTH ADAMS, MA – Over the summer, incoming freshmen to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) read “Don’t I Know You?” a murder mystery by Williamstown author Karen Shepard, who will be on campus Monday, Sept. 3, to discuss her book  from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the Church Street Center. The event, which is free and open to the public, will include a musical performance by alt-country band Gloria Deluxe. A book signing reception will follow in the Church Street Center social hall, from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

First-year students at MCLA are asked to participate in a summer reading project that allows them to read a common book during the summer and then come to campus to discuss it and the issues that it raises.

A Chinese-American born and raised in New York City who teaches writing and literature at Williams College, Shepard is the author of three novels, “An Empire of Women,” “The Bad Boy’s Wife,” and, most recently, “Don’t I Know You?” – a murder mystery set in 1976 New York City. The psychological drama is divided into three parts, with each narrative giving the reader a different angle on the crime.

According to Publisher’s Weekly, “Shepard’s vision of how a murder’s effect reverberates outward inspires us to understand the limitations of intimate knowledge and the extraordinary capacities of the people we think we know best, even as it shows us how we repair those bonds and prepare ourselves to go on.”

The New York Times Book Review called the book, “Darkly tantalizing. … It succeeds brilliantly.” O. The Oprah Magazine said, “Shepard has found a voice here that is as strong and confident and full of wise observation as any in recent American fiction.” And author Tim O’Brien wrote that, “Don’t I Know You?” is “Among the most suspenseful and moving novels I’ve read in many years.”

Shepard has received the William Goyen-Doris Roberts Fellowship for Fiction from the Christopher Isherwood Foundation, won honorable mentions in Best American Short Stories in 1995, 2002 and 2004, was a National Magazine Award Finalist in 2002, and a recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Grant in 2002.

WORKSHOP ON WRITING SACRED POETRY IN WILLIAMSTOWN MAY 16

Williamstown, MA – Ray McGinnis, author of “Writing the Sacred: A Psalm-Inspired Path to Appreciating and Writing Sacred Poetry” (Northstone, April 2005), is coming to the First Congregational Church of Williamstown to teach a workshop on writing sacred poetry on Wednesday, May 16 from 7-9:30 pm.  The workshop is being co-sponsored by Inkberry, which is handling registration for the event.

A Writing the Sacred  workshop explores the Psalms as a doorway to spiritual self-expression by inviting people to discover the poetic forms and themes of the Hebrew Psalms and draw upon these to help articulate their own longing for the sacred. As with his book which in one chapter contains over thirty new sacred poems by writers from a variety of perspectives from both within and outside of organized religion, McGinnis offers a wide invitation for participants to give voice to their own cries of the spirit.

McGinnis guides participants and gives them the tools to compose new psalms/sacred poems for the 21st Century. As a designer of conferences and workshops for over 25 years, he creates a very accessible and inclusive setting. By providing a wide variety of writing exercises, he frees both seasoned writers and those who have never put pen to paper to write with freedom.

A graduate of the Center for Journal Therapy in Denver, Colorado, McGinnis has taught writing workshops since 1999 through his home based business, Write to the Heart©. He has taught a range writing workshops including journal writing, prayer writing, writing for health and wellness, poetry and nature writing, and spiritual autobiography workshops. McGinnis has led workshops for groups as diverse as women in business conferences, lawyers retreats, hospital professionals and hospital chaplains groups, hospice groups, writing groups, libraries, high schools, churches, synagogues, community centres and retreat settings.

A former staff member of the Naramata Centre (1995-99), McGinnis also has served at the United Church's Division of Mission in Canada (1986-95) including oversight of curriculum development, publication of a Youth Magazine, and print resources for youth and young adult ministry. While there he planned national conferences for youth and young adults. McGinnis has kept a journal for over 20 years. A writer for Seasons of the Spirit Online, McGinnis is also a writer for the Seasons of the Spirit curiculum for 12-14 year olds for the 2007-8 Pentecost season. He worships at Canadian Memorial United Church in his hometown of Vancouver, Canada.

Writing the Sacred: A Psalm-Inspired Path to Appreciating and Writing Sacred Poetry (Northstone, April 2005), is McGinnis' first book.  It is available in the USA through The Pilgrim Press and will be available for purchase at the workshop. For more information visit his web site at www.writetotheheart.com

The registration fee is $15 per person and registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. To register, call Inkberry at 413-664-0775 or register online at www.inkberry.org.  The First Congregational Church-United Church of Christ is centrally located at 906 Main Street (Rt. 2) opposite the top of Spring Street in Williamstown, MA.  The building is fully handicap accessible and parking is available in the church lot located behind the building, off of Chapin Hall Drive.
