On Sept. 11, 2001, Sally and Don Goodrich learned their son, Peter, was on United Airlines Flight 175, the second plane to hit the World Trade Center. Peter, who was married and working in Boston as a software developer, was 33. Out of their grieving, they decided to localize a national effort called One Day’s Pay, a national event that aims to make Sept. 11 a day of voluntary service, charity and compassion in individual communities. Several months earlier, Sally Goodrich said, she'd received an e-mail from Rush Filson, a childhood friend of Peter's and now a Marine officer serving in Afghanistan. Filson told of a dire need for schools there. So they began raising money for a new school. And in late April, Goodrich traveled to Afghanistan, where she got to see to the foundation of the school, which will serve kindergarten through eighth grade. CLICK TO READ FULL STORY.
