ADVISOR: Sarah J. McCarthey
Sarah J. McCarthey is professor of Language and Literacy in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research interests are in the social and cultural contexts for literacy instruction; she has published three books, over 30 peer-reviewed articles, and numerous book chapters. She teaches undergraduate courses in reading and writing methods and graduate courses in children's writing and classroom discourse. She is a former owner of the Salt Lake Tribune, a newspaper owned and operated by her
family for over 100 years. Her family has been involved in litigation for more than four years to regain its ownership.
