NORTH ADAMS, MASS - After a well-received inaugural exhibition in January 2007, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) once again will bring together dozens of artists from Massachusetts, New York, New Hampshire, California and Wisconsin for a five-day marathon of art-making as MCLA
Gallery 51 and the MCLA Gallery 51 Annex are transformed into temporary artist workshops for assemblage and experimentation.
Masterminded by collage artist Daniel O'Connor, "Woodshed II: The Next Hundred Hours" will begin on Jan. 15, 2009, with a "Meet the Artists" reception from 6 to 8 p.m. in MCLA Gallery 51.
During the five days that follow, the galleries will be a flurry of collage, sculpture, video, paper, fabric, sound, and a wide variety of painting and drawing practices. These studio spaces will remain open to
the public, and visitors are encouraged to stop by and watch the work in progress.
"Something wonderful happens when you get a bunch of people together to create work. There's an atmosphere of momentum and resonance in which everyone serves as input for everyone else whether they're aware of it or not," said MCLA Gallery 51 Manager and participating artist Ven Voisey.
"In such a compressed space and time you just have to put aside an all-too-often overbearing inner-censor and run with whatever's whirling in your skull and at your fingertips, and if you're lucky, something beautiful is revealed."
The exhibition then will be curated and installed over a single day, with an opening reception to be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20, from 5 to 7 p.m., in MCLA Gallery 51. The event is free and open to the public.
"This exhibition celebrates the communal efforts of a disparate group of artists, some expectantly creating the first artworks ever exposed and others with long lists of gallery and museum exhibitions, the concept and content uniquely designed to delight the viewer by the remarkable output of this eclectic and engaging group of artists," O'Connor said.
"Woodshed II: The Next Hundred Hours" will run in MCLA Gallery 51 through Feb. 22, 2009.
MCLA Gallery 51 is at 51 Main St. in North Adams and is open daily, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The MCLA Gallery 51 Annex is at 65 Main St. in North Adams. For more information, call 413-664-8718, or go to
