Clark Chamber Music Series Features Trio Solisti August 11

Williamstown, MA - The Clark continues its August chamber music series with Trio Solisti on Tuesday, August 11. Concerts begin at 8 pm and tickets are $21 ($18 for members and students) and may be purchased at clarkart.edu, 413-458-0524, or at the museum shop. 

Hailed as "the most exciting piano trio in America" by the New Yorker Magazine, Trio Solisti features Maria Bachman on violin, Alexis Pia Gerlach on cello, and Jon Klibonoff on piano. The brilliant instrumentalists have earned reputations for their passionate, committed, and adventurous concerts, marked by exquisite individuality of expression and seamless ensemble playing. The New York Times
calls their performances "consistently brilliant." Trio Solisti has made critically acclaimed debuts at the Lincoln Center in New York City and the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. The group has also been featured on National Public Radio's "Performance Today." Their latest CD, Café Music, was released in
May 2009. Actively involved in arts education, members of the Trio Solisti lecture and present an annual concert series at Adelphi University.

The program at the Clark features the Haydn Trio in G Major "Gypsy Rondo"; Beethoven Trio in B-flat Major "Archduke"; and the Brahms Trio in C Major, Opus 87.

A fixed-price, three-course dinner will be offered at the Clark Café at 6 pm. Cost for dinner is $25 per person (does not include concert, beverage, tax, or gratuity). Southview Cemetery History Walk Set for August 8

Local Historian Paul W. Marino has announced the next in his series of historical walks for 2009, a Cemetery Walk in Southview Cemetery. It will be held on Saturday, August 8.

Established in 1888 around an existing neighborhood graveyard, Southview Cemetery was North Adams' second  municipal cemetery and today is the final resting place many of the city's most powerful movers and shakers.  These include the city's two greatest philanthropists, our first Mayor, the founders of two major local shoe companies, an architect, a teacher who influenced several generations of local schoolchildren, an Olympic silver medalist, and the only Boy Scout ever to have been made Eagle by the President of the United States.  There are also two veterans of the American Revolution in Southview, one of whom is famous for taking a stand against slavery. 

There is a cenotaph for the first Mayor of North Adams to make the job a full time one, as well as two stunning monuments built of field stones, others made of concrete, and one of pink quartz.

The stories of Southview range from the uplifting to the surprising to the tragic.  Marino tells these stories with a refined sense of showmanship, a sense of humor, and an eye toward historic accuracy, backing up what he says with photos, drawings and maps.  He encourages attendees to bring children, saying, "Local history is the story of where we come from as a community, and how we fit into the greater pictures of world and national history.  These stories are interesting to adults, but kids need to hear them; not only as a matter of interest, but also to help them appreciate their community, what's good about it and how it came to be what it is."

The Southview Walk starts at 2:30pm at the entrance opposite the Drury High School driveway on South Church Street.  Interested persons are advised to dress for the weather, wear a good pair of walking shoes, sun block and a hat with a wide brim.  They should bring children, a canteen or bottle of water, and be prepared to have their ears talked off.  Rain or high wind cancels, but not a whole lot

“Illuminati: Working with Light” Opens at Eclipse Mill Gallery July 31

The Eclipse Mill Gallery is pleased to invite members of the Berkshire arts community to the opening night reception for “Illuminati: Working with Light” this Friday night, July 31, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  The reception will be held in the gallery, located on the first floor of the Eclipse Mill at 243 Union Street in North Adams.

This show promises to be illuminating—quite literally.  Five artists will exhibit artworks featuring the use of light as an artistic medium.  The pieces incorporate a wide variety of types of light, including incandescent, fluorescent, sodium halogen, and LED.  They range in size from the very small to the very large: The smallest work in the show is a steampunk nightlight designed by Julie Seitel, and the largest is an outdoor art installation by John Powell, who will use modified industrial lighting fixtures to transform the Eclipse Mill into a large-scale work of art.  In between these extremes are an incredibly diverse set of works by Brian Jewett, whose lamps utilize post-consumer materials; Marjorie Minkin, who will present works from her collaborations with creative technologist Jamie Robertson and her son Mike Gordon, the bassist in the popular band Phish; and Richard Harrington, whose piece explores geometricity in patterns of light and shadow.

Razia Said Performs at Topia Arts Center July 30

Thursday Night, July 30th Razia Said, Singer from Madagascar performs with her band at the Topia Arts Center in Adams.  She will be singing songs from her cd "Zebu Nation" soon to be released on Putumayo Records.

KinoDance illuminates DownStreet Art

NORTH ADAMS, MA—DownStreet Art presents KinoDance Company's The Refractive Kinescope, a gallery installation with live performances inspired by the history of silent cinema, projector devices, and a curiosity about the persistence of vision.

July 30, as part of this month’s DownStreet Art Thursday, KinoDance will reveal the second part of The Refractive Kinescope installation, the “OKNO-Scope.”

DownStreet Art Thursday is an evening of free openings, events, and activities throughout downtown North Adams.

The okno in “OKNO-Scope” is Russian for window, so it is not surprising that the front window of the Gallery 51 Annex hosts the new piece. The “OKNO-Scope” is an illuminated film poster in motion comprised of 48 frames from silent films.

The frames are arranged into six vertical filmstrips. The wandering light projects a glow through the images onto the evening street. A kinetic sculpture behind the glass directs the light from frame to frame, revealing both short fragments and elaborate scenes from the silent film era.

A human drama unfolds with full force: love triangle, fiasco of wedding arrangement, crime scene, burlesque and flirtations. 

“The ‘OKNO-Scope’ is on view after sunset until one in the morning Wednesday through Sunday. People can think of the ‘OKNO-Scope’ as our after-hours marquis,” says Dedalus Wainwright, set designer for KinoDance Company.

This DownStreet Art Thursday KinoDance Company will also present their second performance. 

Alissa Cardone, a choreographer and co-founder of KinoDance, creates a duet between a man and a woman. The duet explores human emotions that are both clearly revealed and meticulously concealed in face and body. The performers draw their inspiration and physical vocabulary from the silent film era, when emotion and movement were explicitly amplified in order to communicate a story.

They bring the silent film world to life making it present, palpable and knowable while fighting the sense of nostalgia, romanticism and decay which pervade times gone by. The performers invite the viewers to re-interpret the meanings of early cinema in the context of today.
