WilliNet Broadcasts National Town Meeting June 29 & July 1

Williamstowm, MA - WilliNet, community channel 17 in Williamstown, will broadcast "Why Media Diversity Matters," on Friday, June 29 at 9pm and Sunday, July 1 at 8pm.  Distributed by Free Speech TV, "Why Media Diversity Matters" features author, commentator, and talk show host Tavis Smiley, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, FCC Commissioner Michael Copps, LCCR President and CEO Wade Henderson, and other distinguished speakers for a one-of-a-kind event on the importance of media diversity.

There's a battle looming at the Federal Communications Commission and in the court of public opinion. It's a battle over control over today's media environment.

For more than two decades, the FCC, the agency that regulates the media, promoted minority ownership and employment in broadcasting, but that progress has been halted. Today, instead of local ownership with a diversity of views, we now have homogenized, cookie-cutter media divorced from local concerns.

A distinguished and diverse panel of speakers in DC and Denver will discuss why every American should be concerned about the loss of the diverse, independent journalistic voices that used to connect our nation, serve our local communities, and provide the foundation for our democracy.

This broadcast is organized by the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights in partnership with Common Cause, Moveon.org, Free Press, and New America Media.

Speeches from April 14 COOL Noon Rally to be Broadcast

Williamstown, MA The pre-production work for the filming of the April 14 COOL Noon Step It Up rally in Williamstown is complete and it will be broadcast on Willinet (see the schedule below). Please spread the word!

Each of the speakers brought a unique and critically important message to the day. Unfortunately, due to a problem with taping, the last two speakers of the day (Williams College Chaplain Rick Spalding and MGRHS senior and climate change activist Rachel Payne) were not taped. It is a shame since their remarks were so meaningful to all who had the opportunity to hear them.

Williams speech by North Adams native Paul Farm on poverty medicine to air May 22-24 on WilliNet

If you live in Williamstown, and missed internationally renowned physician Dr. Paul Farmer when he spoke at Williams College on May 9, here’s your chance to see and hear his inspiring talk:  "Mountains Beyond Mountains: Healing the World."   Williamstown Community Television (WilliNet)-Channel 17 will replay Farmer’s lecture on May 22, 23, and 24.  Farmer spoke to a full-house and enthusiastic audience at Williams.  Farmer describes his work dealing with diseases that disproportionately afflict the poor, particularly in Haiti and Africa.  Paul Farmer grew up in North Adams and still has family here.  Now, he divides his clinical time between Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and a charity hospital in rural Haiti.  North Hampton writer Tracy Kidder describes Farmer’s mission to conquer diseases among the world’s poor in his best-selling book “Mountains Beyond Mountains.  Dr. Paul Farmer can be seen on channel 17: Williamstown Community Television (WilliNet) on Sunday, May 22, 8:30 p.m.; Monday, May 23, 6 p.m. and Tuesday, May 24, 1:30 p.m. For more information, call Deb Dane, manager of WilliNet at 458-0900 or email her at [email protected].
